Crown for a statue of the Madonna or saints, carved in wood on a circular base with a frill adorned with hemispherical reliefs simulating the gems of a royal crown and a flared body with nine points in the shape of a stylized “acanthus leaf.”
The unfinished internal cavity, with gouge marks, confirms the object’s functional and liturgical use and that this surface was intended to disappear once fitted onto the statue’s head and hinged in the lower hole.
The fine gold gilding is done in gouache over an Armenian bole preparation.
Central Italy, late 18th century.
Dimensions: 6.5 x 11 cm
